My rating: 4 of 5 stars
WARNING READERS! This book is Christian. It does state that in the description, but in case you missed it, I’m stating it in this review. If you’re not a Christian, you might be rubbed the wrong way by the main character’s point of view. There is still a great deal of mystery in the book, so it might not bother you at all, but please don’t read this book and then complain that the author was too preachy. For Christians, this is a refreshing murder mystery that doesn’t contain the sexual scenes that a lot of secular murder/mysteries do.
Another warning for readers is that this book is part of a series, and it will probably leave you a little disappointed in the ending. All of the unanswered questions are not answered. If you enjoy cliffhangers, then this book is for you. If you don’t, then please don’t read this book. I do enjoy cliffhangers, but I do wish the next book was already out. I will be reading this entire series because I must know the rest. One of the things this author is good at is leaving the book in the mind of the reader hours after the reader has finished it. I’m still trying to figure out what happened.
Now, how did I feel about Bailey? I’ve read a lot of the reviews, and I have to agree with the five star ones and the one star ones to a degree. Bailey made me laugh out loud at times. And at other times, I wished I could smack her. Sometimes she was just so stupid and irresponsible. But that’s part of what makes this story move. So many times when we watch thrillers and horror flicks, we say to the dumb blonde who is checking out the noise, “No, stupid! Run the other way! Mind your own business!” Well, here ya go. Bailey is nosey. Bailey is a little cocky at times. Bailey is silly. Bailey is a flirt at times. Bailey is full of lust at times. And sometimes, Bailey is just unbelievable. Bailey has been raised in a Christian home that sounds like it borders on being a little sheltering, but that’s not always a bad thing. But guess what! Bailey is also human, and she is not sinless. She deals with temptation as all humans do, Christian or not. I personally hope that as this series moves on that Bailey will mature and do the right thing. I hope that she is able to show Max that being a Christian does not mean you can’t have fun and enjoy a wonderful life. I hope her life will reflect Jesus enough that he will be drawn to the Christian faith.
Do I recommend this book? Yes, as long as you have read the warnings and are prepared to accept them.
